Game Day Essentials for New Lacrosse Coaches: A Quick Guide

As a new lacrosse coach, preparation is everything! Ensuring you’re well-stocked and arriving early can set the tone for a smooth, successful practice or game day. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

  1. Get There Early – Plan to arrive at least 45-60 minutes early. This extra time gives you a buffer to check the field, set up drills, and address any last-minute issues without feeling rushed.

  2. Stay Hydrated – Bring plenty of water for yourself and your players. Even though players may have their own water bottles, having a backup on hand is crucial.

  3. Stock Up on Balls – Always bring two full buckets of balls. Lacrosse balls tend to disappear fast on the field, especially during shooting drills or scrimmages. Having a plentiful supply keeps the practice flow moving and ensures players get maximum reps.

  4. Extra Gear – Be ready for those players who might forget key items. Carry a few spare mouthguards and some extra gear like gloves, elbow pads, or a helmet. These extras can be lifesavers in a pinch.

  5. Coach’s Toolkit – A small kit can go a long way. Include zip ties, extra strings, a can of field paint, and cones. These items help with quick repairs, setting boundaries, and marking field lines if needed.

  6. First Aid Kit – Though hopefully unused, a basic first aid kit is always good to have on hand for minor cuts, bruises, or sprains.

With these items packed and arriving early, you’ll be ready to handle anything and ensure your players have the best experience possible on the field.
